Rockbridge Baths is quiet, and that is the point. For families the question is usually the same one: what will the children actually do all day? Here is what we tell guests, roughly in order of how far you have to go.
Start with the four acres you are already on
Most days you do not need to leave. The farm has a full tennis court that doubles for pickleball and basketball, a shuffleboard court, and a firepit that is set and ready to light. Walker's Creek runs along the front of the property, and there are 177 acres of calf pasture around you — the cows are a genuine attraction for anyone under ten.
Bring bikes if you have room. The driveway and lane are flat, quiet and safe in a way most neighbourhoods are not.
Goshen Pass — about 15 minutes
The Maury River cuts through the mountains here, and in summer the swimming holes and flat rocks are where local families spend their Saturdays. There are pull-offs along Route 39 with easy river access. Water shoes are worth packing; the rocks are slick.
Boxerwood Nature Center, Lexington
A woodland garden with a play trail built specifically for children — stepping logs, a stream, a treehouse. It is free, rarely crowded, and easy to combine with lunch in Lexington. Good for a morning when you want the children tired by two o'clock.
Virginia Safari Park, Natural Bridge
A drive-through park where you feed the animals from the car. Buy the feed buckets at the entrance. It is the single reliable crowd-pleaser in the area for younger children, and it is worth the drive.
A rainy-day plan
- Lexington's downtown is compact and walkable, with bookshops and ice cream within a block or two
- The Virginia Horse Center often has events open to spectators — worth checking the schedule before you come
- The house has a Roku TV, board games and a games cupboard for the afternoon that gets away from you
What we would tell y'all to book ahead
Very little needs reserving. Check the Horse Center calendar if that interests you, and note that Goshen Pass fills up on hot summer weekends — going early makes a real difference. Everything else you can decide over breakfast.
