Jump View Farm is about sixteen miles from Virginia Military Institute — twenty to twenty-five minutes door to door, on a road that is quiet outside of Lexington itself. It sleeps eleven across four bedrooms, which is the reason most families here book it rather than a hotel.
Why a house rather than three hotel rooms
A VMI weekend usually means several branches of one family arriving from different directions. Hotels in Lexington are limited, fill early around the dates everybody wants, and split a group across floors — so the family that came to spend a weekend together spends it meeting in a lobby.

- Somewhere to gather after the parade or the game instead of a hotel bar
- Space for grandparents who want an early night and cadets' friends who do not
The dates that matter
Demand around Lexington concentrates on a handful of weekends: parents' weekend in the autumn, graduation and commissioning in May, home football games, and Ring Figure. Those dates sell out the town months ahead, and they are the ones worth booking early. Outside them the valley is quiet and the house is easy to get.
Getting there and around
- VMI: about 16 miles, 20-25 minutes
- Washington and Lee: 17.5 miles, effectively the same trip
- Downtown Lexington: 20-25 minutes, with parking that is rarely a problem
- Roanoke airport: 67 miles, roughly an hour and a quarter
- You will want a car. This is rural Rockbridge County, not a walkable town
If there is time either side
Goshen Pass is about seven miles, where the Maury River cuts through the mountains and everyone swims in summer. Jump Mountain Vineyard is two miles and open weekends. Staunton, half an hour north, has the best dining in the area. Most families going to a VMI weekend end up making a long weekend of it.
The house itself
Jump View Farm is an 1870s farmhouse on four acres, surrounded by 177 acres of working calf pasture, with Walker's Creek along the front boundary and Jump Mountain filling the view. Four bedrooms, three bathrooms, 2,700 square feet across two floors. The stairs are original, so it is not a step-free house.
Outside there is a full tennis court that doubles for pickleball, a basketball hoop, shuffleboard and a firepit set ready to light. There is a Level 2 EV charger. Pets are welcome — up to three, $50 per pet for the first week — though the cattle and the electric fence mean dogs need supervising.
